Hey there! How is your summer going? If you are even a little hunting natural summer delights you are probably enjoying mouthwatering strawberries right now!
At least I am! I am not big fan of strawberries, but I cannot resist a locally harvested sweet & juicy ones!
As this is the summer season, and at least in Lithuania we have almost Caribbean weather, it is not just strawberries on the plate! Its fresh tomatoes, cucumber, radish, all the spice herbs like oregano, mint, thyme and much more are booming!
So I invite you to go to a nearest garden or local market, take whatever fresh goodness is presented there and open your head for a seasonal creation of a nutritious meal of your own!
I love cooking with seasonal goods because
– It Tastes great! Products naturally harvested and ripened from the trees have much more flavour & nutrition. Products don’t need to be frozen for transportation & therefore to loose taste!
– Its cheaper! When there is a season & peak of harvest, products don’t need to be stored and farmers need to sell it fast. Prices therefore tend to be lower than in off-peak time.
– Products are fresher & with higher nutritional value!
– Avoiding overseas contaminates. When products are shipped from overseas, you never know what rules are there for regulation of soil contamination & chemicals policy & and you never know what quality you finally get! The opposite is true when fruit is coming from your own tree!
– Eating seasonal goods supports your body’s natural needs! You body need different nutrition according to the climate you live in! So eating what is best harvested locally in the environment you live in nurtures your body best!
– You are more environmentally friendly this way! Eating seasonally reduces the demand for out of season products which further supports more local production and supports local farming in your area which means less transportation, less refrigeration, less heating houses!
It’s really important to note that it’s not always possible to eat locally and seasonally for everyone every time & everywhere. It’s more about being mindful about making decisions where possible that are better for you, your wallet and your health where you can.
